St. Helena Appellation Organization
Appellation St. Helena is the organization representing the wineries and wine grape growers in the St. Helena Appellation.
The origins of the organization date back to December 1875, when Charles Krug and a veritable “Who's Who” of Napa Valley vintners, businessmen and pioneers of the time established the St. Helena Viticultural Club. The organization promoted the wines of the region, and took numerous steps to improve the quality of Napa Valley wines.
In 1880 the group changed its name to St. Helena Viticultural Association. It remained active until around 1912, when the onset of Prohibition caused it to be disbanded.
In 2004, after a 92-year hiatus, grape growers and wineries in St. Helena revived the St. Helena Viticultural Society for education and promotion purposes. The name was soon changed to Appellation St. Helena, felt to be more representative of the group's overall mission.
